Using VB3 as an example when a rack with VB3 was selected VB3 would pop up and you would have visual confirmation of drawbar or leslie speed changes. One of the enhancements I suggested to Brad was the option of having the screen image of a selected VST in a rack displayed on screen when that rack is active. Performer worked flawlessly for me with splits and layers on what by today's standards would be considered a low end laptop running Win 7. I found the developer, Brad, to be responsive to requests for assistance and to suggestions for further enhancements.

I started out with Cantabile free and upgraded to Performer. Overall: I find Cantabile is simpler/faster to use, Forte more flexible routing for external midi sound generators.Īny thoughts from users of either on which one you like better and why? I really just want to be able to set up splits and layers and store them as "Combis" or "Performances" for the songs I'm doing and save them as song names and maybe a set list feature would be cool.

No complaints here though it is rock-solid in its 64 bit variant (as is Forte) and it has built-in jbridging if you want to run 32 bit plugs as well (Forte's is not built in, but it is trivial to run the jbridge installer separately).
PROLOGUE BIDULE UPDATE
Brad's last update to it was 6 weeks ago, but before that it was a couple of years.

I use Cantabile instead of Forte because I find it marginally faster to setup new patches and because it has a built-in audio player so I can practice along with the songs my band plays (I've programmed one drum pad to play the associated mp3, one beneath it to stop playing, and one of my controllers knobs to its volume). Both have great setlist management tools (not in the free version of Cantabile though.you have to buy it). If you have external sound modules you want to control you'll prefer Forte. I own both, and can recommend both both developers are very responsive. Also single-developer show, so I'm not betting on it yet. Also LiveProfessor, which still had a long way to go, last time I checked. Have fooled around with the demo, though, and it's appears to be in the same league as Forte. There's also Bloxpander, the only host I haven't played around with enough. Still worth it, if you have that DIY aptitude.

Ive had to use 3rd party plugins for getting it to play well with PC messages, for example. The ease with which you can capture settings on multiple VSTs as a 'snapshot', combine several of these into a setlist, flip between them using PC messages is beautiful.īidule, OTOH, is a tweaker's wet dream.

Every aspect of it feels like it was designed for the professional keyboardist in mind. Forte comes across as a much more 'polished' product. There's nothing that Cantabile does that can't be done (perhaps better) on Forte or Bidule. But I don't want my live rig to be based on a shaky foundation - especially when there are better alternatives out there. Still am, actually I love it for it's sheer flexibility and programming power. Prior to that, I was a huge fan of Cantabile. I deeply regret that I didn't document the whole issue properly it did involve several days of programming.

My issues occurred during that period, which is why I decided to bail on Cantabile. During this period, there was no support for customers, except for community discussion in the KVR forum. That's when I switched to Bidule.Īlso - Cantabile is basically a one-man show, and the developer is back after a 1-2 year hiatus, to focus on 'other projects'. Yes, my setup was fairly complex, but I tested the same setup on Bidule and Forte, and had no issues whatsoever. The CPU load meter hits the roof, stays there, doesn't come down, and all you have is this terrible buzzing noise coming out. It was very reproducible, and occurred when the number of held notes was high (heavy sustain pedal use). Heads up to the OP and anyone else - quite sometime ago, I encountered a very serious CPU usage issue with Cantabile.
